The Sum Of Its Parts
The title of this collection is a statement borrowed from Aristotle’s famous phrase, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. This concept deals with brain-states such as ‘awe’ and ‘overwhelm’, both of which can be broken down into smaller and more manageable pieces of information, but as a whole can become something bigger than ourselves. In these works, I use the simple square repeatedly to create patterns that evoke such emotions or states of conscious being. Sometimes the patterns are uncomplicated and flowing, other times the patterns create chaos and unease; some use bright, clashing colours, others borrow from the natural environment. Whatever feelings are conjured up, remember, it’s just a square.
